Dallas–Fort Worth is a hot, humid climate with high summer dew points. This makes moisture management one of the most important considerations in any spray foam project. Open-cell and closed-cell behave very differently when it comes to vapor and liquid moisture.

Open-Cell: Vapor Permeable

Open-cell foam allows water vapor to pass through it. The technical term is vapor-permeable or semi-permeable. This is actually a significant advantage in roof deck assemblies under shingle roofing.

When the assembly is designed correctly, open-cell allows the roof sheathing to dry inward if the roof gets wet, which is important for long-term sheathing durability in North Texas where storms occasionally drive moisture under shingles.

Closed-Cell: Vapor Retarder

Condensation Control: The Most Common DFW Problem

In North Texas, condensation is the most common moisture failure in metal buildings, workshops, garages, and crawl spaces. Warm, humid air contacts cold metal surfaces and water forms on the inside of the panel.

Closed-cell spray foam solves this by keeping the inside surface of the metal panel warm enough that humid air cannot condense. Even one inch of closed-cell on a metal roof can eliminate roof sweating entirely.
