Drill and fill is a retrofit method for adding insulation to walls that are already closed up, without tearing off the drywall or siding. It is a real technique with a real place, and we get asked about it often. At Texas Foam Pro we do not offer drill and fill, and we think the reasons why are worth explaining in plain language. This is not about steering you toward what we sell. It is about what happens when you inject material into a wall you cannot see inside of, and why we would rather do work we can stand behind. What drill and fill insulation actually is

Drill and fill, sometimes called inject and fill or dense pack, is a way to insulate an existing wall without opening it up. An installer drills a series of small holes into each wall cavity, either from the inside through the drywall or from the outside through the siding. Then a hose is fed into each hole and the cavity is filled with loose material under pressure. When the cavity seems full, the holes are plugged and patched.

The material blown in is usually one of three things: dense packed cellulose (ground up recycled paper treated with fire retardant), blown fiberglass, or a pour or injection foam that expands to fill the space. The idea is appealing on the surface. You add insulation to a bare wall, you avoid a full remodel, and the wall goes back to looking the way it did before.

It is worth being clear about one thing up front. Drill and fill can be spray foam, in the sense that some injection foam products are foam. So when a caller asks whether we do drill and fill, the honest answer is that even though we are a spray foam company, this specific method is not something we offer. The reasons have nothing to do with the material and everything to do with what you can and cannot see during the job.

Why homeowners ask about it

Most people who call about drill and fill live in an older Dallas-Fort Worth home with little or no insulation in the exterior walls. They feel it in the summer when the west facing rooms bake in the afternoon, and in the winter when a room stays cold no matter what the thermostat says. The appeal is understandable. Nobody wants to remove drywall, move furniture, and repaint a whole room just to add insulation. Drill and fill promises comfort without the mess. The problem is that the promise skips over what is really behind that wall, and that is exactly where our concerns begin.

The core problem: you are working blind

When we spray foam an attic roof deck, a rim joist, or an open wall cavity during a remodel or new build, we can see everything we are insulating. We see the framing, the sheathing, the wiring, the plumbing, and the condition of the wood. We watch the foam go on, we confirm the thickness, and we inspect the finished result. That visibility is the whole reason we can guarantee our work.

Drill and fill throws that visibility away. You drill a hole the size of a quarter, feed a hose into a dark cavity, and push material in until it feels full. You never actually look inside the wall. You are trusting that the cavity is empty, dry, and healthy, and you are trusting that the material spreads evenly to every corner. In an older home, none of those things is safe to assume.

We cannot see rot, moisture, or mold

This is the reason that matters most to us. Exterior walls are the walls most exposed to weather, and in the DFW climate they take a beating from heat, humidity, and the occasional wind driven rain. Over the years, a small roof leak, a failed window flashing, a leaking supply line, or years of interior humidity can leave hidden damage inside a wall cavity: soft or rotted framing, water stained sheathing, rusted fasteners, and mold growing on the back of the drywall.

From the outside, that wall can look perfectly fine. You would never know until you opened it up. If we fill that cavity through a drilled hole, we bury the problem instead of finding it. Worse, packing damp insulation against wet wood can trap that moisture and give mold an even better place to grow.   • Rotted or soft framing that needs repair before anything is covered up
  • Water stained sheathing that points to an active or past leak
  • Existing mold that should be remediated, not sealed inside the wall
  • Damaged or improperly run wiring hidden in the cavity
  • Old leaks that will keep leaking after the wall is filled

We have no idea where the material actually went

Even in a wall that is perfectly healthy, drill and fill has a second problem: there is no reliable way to confirm the cavity filled completely and evenly. Wall cavities are not empty boxes. They are crossed by fire blocking, wiring, plumbing, electrical boxes, old bracing, and framing quirks that vary from house to house. Any of those can block the material and leave a void behind it.

When you inject through a small hole, you are guessing. The material might pack tight in the top of the cavity and leave the bottom bare, or wrap around an obstruction and skip the space behind it. You get gaps and settling exactly where you cannot see them. Those voids become the new cold spots and the new paths for air leakage, which is the very problem you were trying to solve. You paid to insulate the wall, but you have no way to prove the wall is actually insulated.

Loose fill materials add one more wrinkle. Dense packed cellulose and blown fiberglass can settle over time, sliding down within the cavity and opening a gap at the top of the wall years after the job is done. Because it is all hidden, you would only find out from the return of the same drafts and cold rooms you started with.

Our approach is to insulate where we can see and verify our work. That is why we focus on spray foam in places like the attic roof deck, wall cavities that are open during a remodel or new build, crawl spaces, rim joists, and garages and shops. In all of those, the framing is exposed, we can inspect it, and we can confirm exactly how much foam went where.

You are a spray foam company, so why not do injection foam? Because the method, not the material, is the issue. Even foam injected through a drilled hole goes into a cavity we cannot inspect for rot, moisture, or mold, and we still cannot confirm it filled every corner.
